If you're using the tar sources, run ./configure on each source package and
include the --prefix= setting. For instance

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/kde

will set the base of the KDE distribution to /usr/local/kde 
(/usr/local/kde/bin,/usr/local/kde/lib/,/usr/local/kde/share etc.)
