I have the same chip and a similar problem I have just about every sound utility installed. I can play music cds only if the volume control is all the way up and the speakers are cranked. When I try to play a midi file with KMid I get 'could not open /dev/sequencer Probably another program is using it.' What sort of error messages are you getting?
