If you are dealing with the Intel Architecture, there are 3 different types of packages (one of which is common to all platforms):
ix86.rpm - these are binary, installable packages, which must be installed on x86 or later (ie, if it is for i586 (Pentium), it can't be used on a 486.) noarch.rpm - these are typically documentation or system configuration files which are not dependent on the type of architecture of the machine. src.rpm (SRPMS) - these are files that can be 'rebuilt' and consist of the source code of the program or library and any relevant patches.
