Generally it's Mandrake's policy (as with other distros) to only
issue bug fix or security updates for already released versions.
kernel-2.4.8-34.1mdk was a security update.

If you want to use a newer kernel, d/l the latest cooker version
from the cooker mirrors. (read the 'Warning' on this page)
     http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/cookerdevel.php3

The cooker kernels are stable kernels, but you should install them
with 'rpm -ivh' so as not to mess with your existing kernel. The ready
made rpm will install the kernel to /boot, make the proper links, edit
lilo.conf and run lilo for you. On reboot the new kernel will be an
option, your existing kernel will still be the default. You can make
sure this has happened by running 'lilo as root. If you see the new
kernel as an option, and there are no error messages, then ...

Choose the new kernel and run it for a while. You'll probly
experience no problems, and can then make the cooker kernel the default
if you want. I'd also suggest you lurk for a while on the cooker
mailing list, or read the recent archive at
             http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-cooker
Please don't post questions to the cooker list tho. It's for developer
discussions, not support or non-development comments.
