Kill without a signal defaults to asking the process nicely to please quit. If
the process is hung it won't. Try reading chapter 9 in RUTE at

http://rute.sourceforge.net/rute.html

I promise it is worth it.

Then try "kill -s 9 XXX" (yes XXX is the PID).
