robert, out of curiosity, what vintage cpu is mainboard?
some of early models will be very difficult to find parts for, and an extreme amount of early models had cards that even compaq dealers were not given info on. compaq, dell, gateway, hp, sony, all started out with their own oem cards for audio, fax/modem, nia, scsi, vga, with non standard drivers. this became even worse when pnp can into design. vlsi chipsets used on many of these cards had known manufactures, even same chipsets between box oem. but big diff is between chipset and card edge connector. and if a rom is used, you can bet it will be diff. this is what is know as 'american marketing'. great in thought, weak in operation. to make matters worse, some box oems supplied a 'recover cd' that would recover, maybe, from a crash. but forget it if you needed to fully install a new os. all needed drivers were not included. found only at 'friendly dealer'. so, if links others have sent you help, but you have trouble with a card that will not config or hangs, save time and trouble, replace card. many times you will find an oem card that has a production run change and what ever drivers worked on previous, do not work on later. i do not know what parts availability are like in lviv, ukraine, so you may have to order in a new card. which ever way, check http://www.linuxhardware.org to insure that new card has drivers. good luck.
