Bill - I posted it just a few minutes ago, in response to another reply in the thread. What you might try, assuming the other drive is mounted at /mnt: # tar -cf / --exclude=/mnt/* | (cd /mnt ; tar -xf -) Of course, this assomes that you have a complete file system on one partition, and you're just going to copy or mirror that layout on another drive. Tar has a --one-file-system option (see the tar man page) which you might find helpful if you're just wanting to copy the contents of one filesystem somewhere else.
