recently i did some experimentation on this issue myself. i found that
most old applictions run with codeweavers wine.
i did a win98 installation on my FAT32 partition and installed Office97
on it. i was able to run M$ word, Excel, and powerpoint from linux
no problem with wine ( they even started pretty fast. )

i was also able to run Internet Explorer 6, and most small apps, (
winzip, winrar, flash projector files, etc. )

before this, i tried a windows XP installation, and the biggest
app i could get going was Getright. And it was slooooooow.

after messing with wine's config wizard my final conclusion was:
leave it alone. it worked best for me that way. just click OK and
next till the wizard finishes.
