[newbie] cable modem question

I have linux 7.1 and i dont know a thing, but want to learn. I am on a cable modem but dont know how to configure linux to operate on the cable modem. I have internet through at&t broadband. Could someone give me a step by step instructons? Thanks.   Raymond
