Unlike the usual multi-CD or DVD extravaganza the single distribution CD installs a minimal Linux which is then thrown away after it downloads and compiles everything _according to your hardware setup_ from scratch. The fact that everything in Mandrake is generic (installed via prebuilt RPMs) and thus compiled defensively is probably why KDE and Gnome (and others) are slow.
