Not sure if you are aware of this, Rosemary, but enabling acpi is a function that affects the kernel - it can't change itself while it is running, so any change you make won't take effect until you reboot.

No I didn't know that, had no idea what it might do.

The options that I'm aware of are acpi=ht, acpi=off, and acpi=on. Whenever I install a new kernel, it automatically sets itself to acpi=ht. With that option, I have no sound, and no graphical lilo for booting, and with earlier kernels I had problems with shutdown too - I can understand a kernel option affecting the booting & shutdown, but the sound??? Anyway, I now always change it to use acpi=on, which resolves all problems.

This time when I booted I got sound as the graphical desltop loaded - didn't have that before, but could play and hear musical CDs. After reading this post and seeing that changing acpi could affect the graphical lilo I was almost too scared to reboot and try it!

You can edit the lilo.conf file manually, but you must run lilo as root afterwards, and then reboot. I suggest you try all the options, and see if any of them work for you - if it can affect my sound, it might affect your usb!

I used MCC as didn't like the idea of meddling with lilo.cof in CLI. Seemed much simpler to check a box! Anyway it works and not only the card reader, but also my camera are recognized. Now to learn the graphics programmes! Thanks. Also need to make a note of this in my linux help notes.
