Hi gang,
Just joined the group and wanted to share a recent experience with my Compaq Presario 2545US laptop that some of you might find helpful. I of course installed Linux on my portable box only to find out that it had a Winmodem which will not run under it. I did quite a bit of research, and rather than try to hack a solution to my problem (because I really AM a newbie) I decided that I wanted a plug and play solution. After mucho reading of list archives, it seemed apparent that a PCMCIA card which was not a Winmodem would work with most any Linux distro.
So, I searched high, searched low, and finally found what I thought would work at a local chain here in S. California called, "Best Buy." It is a Dynex PCMCIA v.92 modem card, model number DX-M200. It was just under eighty bucks. I loaded it into the card slot, turned on the computer and it worked right away with no configuration on my part. I have run it under the following distros:
Mandrake 2005 Limited Edition (what I am on now) Mandrake 10.1 SuSE 9.2 Ubuntu Debian Fedora
Oddly enough, Knoppix 3.8.1 did not detect it and I haven't figured that one out yet. Knoppix is my favorite live distro though, so I figure I'll fiddle with it some more. Hope this helps someone because I sure was feeling pretty down thinking that I would not be able to use Linux - but the card modem worked excellent, it has onboard power management features for your mobil box, and was plug and play for lack of a better term. Oh, one other odd thing - in the Mandrake hardware configuration tool window, it does not show the card. Instead, it is down in the "unknown" section at the bottom of the list as a "ttyS6" id. Despite the fact that the system is calling it an unknown, the modem runs with the selection "dev/modem" in KPPP's configuration box. Again, no configuration on my part other than entering the user name, password, dialup phone number, etc. Just the usual stuff. It is quite fast as well. Probably another 10 or 20 percent faster than the original Winmodem was running under XP.
Best wishes,
Paul
Paul; Could youhave a look through your modem's documentation and find us a website please? I'd like to check it out.
Thanks!
