I have managed to get my system back pretty much working as it was previously. (the only minor issue is that i had to change amarok to use the aKode engine as i keep getting errors trying to use arts as i previously did.)
I uninstalled both mdkdm and kde. Then installed the latest versions of both (ie kde 3.4, thanks thac). BTW kde 3.4 is pretty nice, i like the new tool-tips on the kde Panel!
