While they share the win32 codecs, mplayer and xine have separate implementations for using those codecs, which means that mplayer plays files xine doesn't and vice versa. Usually when one works out how to cope with one weird file format, then the other catches up a version or two by copying the code. Same with DVD navigation and the like.

I can now vouch for this - the Mary Gauthier video which under Kaffeine/Gxine was giving me picture but no sound plays fine using mplayer which I hadn't installed till now owing to some bad experiences with an earlier version.

A problem solved which, though not really significant, had been nagging at me for a while.
