I don't know whether it helps, but I had password problems too. What I had to do was boot to 'linux 1' - at the lilo splash screen hit Esc, then type 'linux 1' - and change the user password. It seemed that once it had had a problem it would not authenticate the root password either. The new password had to be a minimum of 8 letters and not based on a recognisable dictionary word. After that I had no more problems.

I don't know whether this is a MDV level or at kernel level, but I resent the fact that I am being told what I can and can't do. I should be able to make my own decision about the level of security required.

Seems so strange - I didn't have any of these problems on the fisrt install some weeks ago. But then I did have a bunch of other ones with bad signature messages. I used the exact same password and it accepted it, but it did have one number in it, although not a recognisable dictionary word. Now my easyzarb set up for urpmi has stalled overnight, even though internet connection open. Guess I'll do them bit by bit.
