I guess I have heaps of reading to do all of a sudden, I'm being
sent to Aussie for a couple of weeks and want to keep things
running here at home.
Situation:
1.) Stand alone computer, PIII - 733Mhz - 512RAM - ADSL via eth0 -
Static IP - with heaps of emails to manage along with some actual
CAD work.
Running MDK10 Official at present as this pending trip has
put off the 2005LE installation.
2.) Haven't tried remote access / control before.
3.) This one is quite simple really -- ' Help.'
Basically, where do I start, what's the best reading and can it be
done within 2 hours each night for the next four nights. ( So I
might need to stretch the hours a bit. )
What do I want to be able to do ? ~ Using a LiveCD ( Possibly
PCLinuxOS though I am downloading MandrivaMove right now ) I would
use a computer in Aussie to access my own computer here and do some
actual work on my computer in the process. Where the Aussie
computer is, is unknown, hence the idea of a LiveCD ~ I touch
nothing and leave nothing behind.
Is this possible without letting the world in ?
I am using the gateway/router firewall at present ( Linksys WAG54G
) ~ have webmin up and running ~ and a slow aged brain for now.
Anyone in the mood to get me there ?
Oh..... one other thing, the above will be of no use if I have a
power outrage and the computer doesn't restart on power back. I can
configure things software to boot auto like for now but I'm not
sure how to get the hardware to simply " PowerOn " once power is up
and running again. Any ideas anyone?
If you got this far, then thanks heaps for at least reading the
lot. Hope you can assist.

This looks like a good tutorial. It's not specifically geared to
Mandriva.
http://www.vanemery.com/Linux/VNC/vnc-over-ssh.html
But I would as a newbie just take baby steps.
I would just get it working regularly. To test and create a basic
understanding.
Then try it with ssh.
Ok to start first go to: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and follow the
instructions there to configure software sources.
Then to install, open a konsole Star>system>terminals>konsole
The type su and then roots password to become root.
Then urpmi tightvnc-server and urpmi tightvnc.
This will install the server and client.
Now type exit in console and drop back down to you as a regular user.
Now type vncserver :2
This should on first run prompt you for a password and open a new
xserver running on port 5902.
You must open this port on your router to remotely connect to this
remote desktop.
Alternatively you can install and run rfbdrake or it's called krfb and
open up the desktop your currently running to make it availalable for
remote control.
On the remote side assuming you are all booted up with pclinuxos or
Mandrake move or whatever look for remote desktop connection. I think
the command line is krdc. Type in your remote ip:2 like
123.123.123.123:2 and you should connect. This sure the heck is not
coprehensive directions nor is it comple or secure but I hope it's alt
least an overview. Googling should find you more info.
Hope the heck this helps someone....lol
