that is accurate only if you are speaking of a broadband modem that connects with an ethernet cable, if you are speaking of a dial-up modem, you should have that connected to the linux box serial port(or if internal. then you will need a network card from the computer to the switch, and just make sure your linux box's '/etc/hosts' and your windows boxes 'c:\hosts' (not hosts.txt just hosts), file names and IDs all the IPs on the network...
what type of modem is it were are talking about...

It's a dial up hardware modem which works fine with mandriva. I just realised that previous advice wouldn't work ... It's Linux to Linux, mandriva to mepis at present, but second box will change. I have checked, and both boxes have networking capability - have the details somewhere.
