I have an older machine that turns itself on. At first it was
spooky. Then it was mildly amusing. Now it's outright annoying.

Any speculations as to how this might be happening?

Yes, wake on lan, wake on keyboard. Look in the BIOS if those options are set.

If it is an ATX power supply, also check the BIOS settings for what the
machine does after a power outage. If it is set to power on, it may be
seeing power fluctuations as loss of power, and powering on.

It may also have a setting that turns it on at a specific time. I have
Asus boards that have that.

Want to have the computer ready for work at 9AM, but don't want it
running all night--set it to wake up at 8 or 8:30AM. That will give
anacron time to do what it has to do and it will be waiting for you when
you're ready to do your thing.
