Thanks, Mikkel.
The box itself never got moved around, only the wires down near the
outlets; and XP boots up fine, so I don't believe that's a problem.
I booted Knoppix and ran e2fsck on hdb1:
hdb: task_in_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest
Error }
hdb: task_in_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=601,
sector=599
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, secotr 599
printk: 2 messages suppressed.
Buffer I/O error on device hdb1, logical block 536.
This same error occurs for 4 different sectors and logical blocks.
I ran e2fsck on hdb6 and hdb7:
/dev/hdb6: 6787/5160960 files (4.1% non-contiguous),1723631/10319746
blocks
/dev/hdb7: pretty much the same.
To my kindergarten-level linux-trained mind this doesn't look good for
the /boot partition.
Easy fix? Baby-with-the-bath-water? Chicken-sans-head-dance?
I'd love to fix this rather than reinstall (been there, done that).
Learnin' lots!!
