Finally got it figured out. My system wouldn't boot past the filesystem check, due to something wrong with the journal part of ext3. Ended up booting with Knoppix, mounting partitions, changing fstab: changed partitions to ext2. Still same deal. But now it uses fsck.ext2 to checkfilesystem and runs into the journal problem, so changed the last character in fstab line for /boot partition to "0", so no filesystem check. Now I can boot up.

Turns out I've got bad blocks where the ext3 journal resides on the drive. Used the UltimateBootCD to check the drive, and sure enough: failing drive (Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 80G). I think it's only about a year old; I'll have to check and see if they'll warranty it.

Thanks to whomever gave me the tip about the Ultimate Boot CD, I think it was Mikkel. That is an incredible tool. I've made copies to pass to friends. Everyone should have one in his/her disc case!!

Mikkel is always a reliable source. OTOH I've got 3 Maxtors in this box, an one'a them is an 80g. It's over a year old, and not displayin any problems yet. 'hddtemp' reports it at about 65C, while a similar (older) 40g Maxtor is only 45C. All run 24/7

CPU Temp: +47°C (low = +15°C, high = +60°C) sensor = thermistor M/B Temp: +32°C (low = +15°C, high = +45°C) sensor = thermistor
/dev/hda: Maxtor 6Y080L0: 64°C
/dev/hdb: MAXTOR 6L040J2: 45°C

I haven't figured a way to get a temp for the 160g SATA Maxtor (/dev/sda) that's also in this box. But a finger probe ;) tells me its even hotter than the 80g.

Bottom line, all new high capacity high rpm drives run very hot, regardless of brand. Heat kills! Warranties are shorter now, so about all you can do is keep your case as cool as possible, an hope for the best. This case has bays for 5 drives, so I keep an empty bay between each of the three drives. Which also helps to keep them as cool as possible. IMO, runnin 24/7 is better than the heat cool cycles of shuttin down overnite.

FWIW, all three drives are ReiserFS
