Hotplug and udev, working together, are susposed to take care of that type of problem. But it isn't something I can test - I don't have a USB to serial converter, and my externel modem is 300 miles away, being used by one of my sisters. (I have DSL here.) In any case, as long as you have a way to make it work in Linux, that is the important thing.
If you deside to try 10.2, and it doesn't work automaticly, let me know, and I can help you write the udev rule. It will probably be something like: KERNEL="ttyUSB0", SYMLINK="modem" but you may want to fine tune it so you only get the symlink when plugging in the one converter. Mikkel PS - I would love to heare more about the solor powered setup of yours off hte list. -- Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with Ketchup!
