Thanks David,
I'm going to do a fresh installation of the LE 2005 and will try that.
Did you find 'kdenetwork-kppp-provider'? Is it on one of the LE2005
disks? Or did you use another computer/modem to download it to a disk?

Thanks everyone.
My problem was partially solved but evolved into another one.
When I had 10.1 installed my external USR modem worked fine
Once 10.2 was installed it would dial, successfully handshake and
connect but not log on.
So I reinstalled 10.1 and found that the problem was 10.2 did not
offer Kppp which seemed to be the bridge between the modem and the
operating system.
So I tried to upgrade with the three LE 2005 set of disks.
All seemed to go well during the exception of the following: "nvidia
(6111) Installing module.
Kernel source for 2.6.1-6 mdk not installed. Cannot install this
module."
At the conclusion of the installation I end up with the following:
"Mandrakelinux release 10.2 (Limited Edition 2005) for i586.
Kernal 2.6.11-6 mdk on an i686 /tty
localhost login:"
I login as owen
"last login: Tue. Jan 21 04:52:17 on tty1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] host ~]$
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I been working on this for two
days. I now consider myself a sub novice newbie.

Owen, I found when installing 10.2 that I had to go find 'kdenetwork-
kppp-provider' and download/install to get my modem to work. Might be
worth a check.
