Dear Mikkel,
Thank you very much for your suggestion. I bought the laptop almost 2 years ago, with Celeron 1GHz and 256MB RAM. The video controller is dominated by the SIS 630 chipset.
I lunched the "startx", and waitted for 10 minutes also, nothing changes. I simply re-formatted the EXT3 partition, and did not choose the "select individual package" during installation phase. (I customized during first installation to choose individual package, not sure whether it is a dependency issue). And let the system start directly from level 5.
This time Mandriva LE 2005 lunched the fantastic KDE 3.3 desktop. This is the first time I use KDE 3.3, with a 2.6 kernel. I should say that almost all the applications run quite well and faster than those on the RH 9 platform. I like it very much.
Another issue here: can you find the GTK+ 2.x development and related package on this LE 2005? I saw this package in the ptk-list on the first CD, but the grafic installation tool "install software" under KDE does not find it.
Thank you again

First, don't worry about the
(EE) Failed to load module "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a"
error message. It is not the cause of hte problem. X will still work
with that error. A better place to look for the problem is
.xsession-errors in your home directory, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
One thing to keep in mind - if you have an older laptop, be prepared for
it to take a while to start the window manager the first time, especialy
if you are running KDE. There is a fair amount of setup that has to be
done the first time.
There is one other thing that will cause a fairly long delay in starting
X. If you specified a hostname for your machine, or you are getting one
as part of bringing up you Ethernet connection, and the name can not be
looked up, then there is a DNS timeout delay when starting X. This delay
is about 90 seconds. The easy fix is to make sure there is an entry in
/etc/hosts for your hostname. Something like:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localnet localhost
works...
