router. Says "no networks detected". Kwifimanager says I have 54mbps and
100% signal but not connected. So has anyone else fought this fight and
won, and if so, any ideas what I might be doing wrong. I am nearly
incoherent with this. Oh, maybe that is my normal state, anyway, help is
appreciated.
Dennis; Did you try looking at www.zd7000forums.com ? The site is all
about the Z-Series HP laptops and your situation has been asked and
answered about 20 or 30 times.
There's a good thread on this exact situation here;
http://www.zd7000forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3575&highlight=linux
If that doesn't do it for you, get back to the list or to me directly.
The guy who posted that solution actually had a few minor things
missing, but a few follow-ups in that thread solved the rest of the issues.
If you have to resort to ndiswrapper, make sure that the verion matches
your kernel as closely as possible or compile one from source - it takes
about 30 seconds to do and the ndiswrapper site has detailed instructions.
My HP laptop didn't come equipped with the wireless card installed (it's
the exact same one you have now), which is a mini-pci card that is
installed in the same compartment as your ram. Instead, I picked up a
DLink DWL-AG660 CardBus (PCMCIA) card instead, which works fine with the
linuxant package.
Your wireless card is probably the Broadcom 94306 Mini-PCI wireless 'G'
card, and a lot of people on the site above have it working like a
charm, so it's definitely a workable card.
HTH's
That did it, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. I have been trying for a week with
various different configurations and the sample ifcfg-wlan0 that was in the
forum link did it. Were smokin' at 54mbs and no umbilical. Thanks again.
Glad it worked for you Dood! I'm planning on taking another run at
ndiswrapper before my linuxant subscription runs out. Apparently, they
also have a bunch of extra things in that site that you might want to
look at as well, like getting your multi-media buttons working and your
onboard modem. There's a lot of Linux people on the forum as well, who
can offer specific help regarding your laptop.
One word of advice though. Whether you're running an AMD or Intel CPU, I
strongly suggest that you carefully remove your CPU fans, clean the heat
sink on the CPU and put a layer of good thermal grease on the CPU. This
will run your system about 25 degrees cooler than it does now.
Check the forum for other good suggestions.
