I guess I need to explain more. When you see a command typed as:

iwconfig essid "<access point essid>"

what that means is replace <access point essid> with the Access Point
essid for your system. For example, if you were using infinity as the
essid, you would enter:

iwconfig essid "infinity"

You will find the same convention used in the name pages, and most of
the HOWTOs. In the man pages, you will also see things enclosed in [].
This means that what ever is in the [] is optional. There are a few more
things like that, but I can not think of them right now.

I will think on the rest of your problem, and get back to you. But right
now, I am thinking about heading for bed...
