I added that to my /etc/rc.d/init.d/spamassassin (I changed the one that I was using). I don't know what it was that made a difference, but I just parsed 90+ messages in a touch over 3 minutes--SA just chugged steadily through them with no hangs like previously. I can live with that. I suppose I could go back and undo my changes one at a time, but I'm not patient enough to find out what single change or combination of changes cured the problem. Thanks to all that helped. e
