I do not know enough about DVD's yet to directly answer your question, but I
have a few of my own:
Did you use an ftp client (Smartftp and friends) to download the image file?
Some WEB browsers may download it in text mode instead of binary.
Were the downloads interrupted?
Did you try a different mirror?
