This appeared on cooker list - just in case it helps:

I'm running cooker and when I restart the boot process stops on this 
message: 
"Waiting for the CUPS deamon getting ready". Then it waits and when I 
returned home 4.5 hours later it was still waiting. The only way (I've 
found) 
to start the computer is to:
1: start with a rescue CD.
2: remove CUPS (and dependancies).
3: restart Linux from HD.
4: reconfigure printer.
My printer is an HP Photosmart 7450

You never said whether you were running 2005LE or 2006RCx - if it's 2006 
this message would be relevant.
