Thanks again. This time I get:

 Loading vmlinuz...............
 Loading cdrom-ch.rdz.......
 Ready.
Your CPU does not support long mode. Use 32bit distribution.

My ISOs have names like Mandriva-Linux-Powerpack-2006-CD1.i586.iso, so
I'm assuming I don't have the 64bit distribution. Also CD1
successfully booted on another machine with a Pentium IV 2.2Ghz.

I'm thinking about trying a network boot (maybe there's something wrong
with the CD drive). Of course, the machine doesn't have a floppy
drive, so I'd have to either install a floppy drive, or figure out how
to get a copy of network.img and network_drivers.img onto a bootable
USB...

Any other ideas out there?
