Then as root:
"mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable"  that should mount it on /mnt/removable. If 
it dumps you a "specify the filetype" you could try 
"mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable" but I have my doubts if it'll give 
much joy.
Sometimes a device isn't partitioned and can be mounted with solely /dev/sda.

I've been having similar trouble reading some Sd cards in a USB card-reader 
which reads fine using a pcmcia adapter; :-s
