Actually, Microsoft has only been actively participating in the destruction of the internet since 1995; it just seems longer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer). Back in the mid 90's, Gates was pushing his own on-line service that was a Microsoft version of the closed-content models of Compuserve and AOL. He was widely quoted at the time that there was not much of a future for the internet. So much for the vision thing...
