One thing, though - before you do any configuration at all, as root, go
to /etc/samba and copy smb.conf to smb.conf.orig. There are lots of
examples and help lines in there that you may want to examine later,
and any changes you make will overwrite smb.conf so it's worth having a
copy.

can we help there?
is it a configuration problem, or just no cables between the boxes?
One problem is when I go through Control Center I get to points that I'm
not sure what to put in.
First let me give you a bit about our network setup:
We have our Internet connection fed directly into a Linksys Wireless
Router. My, Tracie's, and Mom's main [ Windoze ] computers are linked
directly to the router. Everything else, with the exception of the
laptop, goes through a Linksys Switch connected to the router. At any
given time there may be as many as seven or eight computers connected.
Never fewer that four, unless someone turns one off.
The router handles all the different computers talking to each other.
NOW, in Control Center it asks for "DHCP host name". Is that the router?
OR, is that the network work group? If it's the router do I put in the
address [ 192.168.1.0 ] or something else? In the next screen I get a
message:
what ever you want to name the computer you are on, and does not
need/should not be a fully qualified domain name. I use dads2p2 to note
the computer is mine, with 2 Pentium 2s
"Please enter your host name.
Your host name should be a fully-qualified host name,
such as 'mybox.mylab.myco.com'.
so for this I use "dads2p2.ed-tharp.kicks-ass.org" since I use the
ed-tharp.kicks-ass.org domain name from dyndns, you can use your ISPs
name like joe-shimtz.earthlink.net
You may also enter the IP address of the gateway if you have one. Last
but not least you can also type in
your DNS server IP addresses."
this is the routers IP address (?192.168.0.1?)
Then at the bottom it asks "Host name (optional) ______________________"
UH???????????????????
that is the can be the same as the dhcp name "dad2p2"
or leave it blank, it is optional...
As I recall M$ Windoze just needs DHCP set to automatic and a work
group. [ to lazy this morning to check that out *<[:oD ]
and this is pretty much the same, you can allow the dhcp server (the
router) to name the box, the workgroup name is a samba/windows thing,
but does need to be set if you want to share folders with windows computers
