Okay. Did the test. A regular backup on the unwilling Philips CD-RW80
went just fine. Blanking, burning and it verified OK to the last bit.
Then I blanked and did the audio-cd burning with the Plextor cd-rw. And
the verdict of the jury (the cd-player in my stereo): 'no disc'.

I tried burning it with speed 1, but cdrdao insists on not going lower
than 4. This is the cd-rw's lower limit so that figures.

So after a burn, I tried mounting the cd:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]$ mount /mnt/cdrom
/dev/hdc: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdc: can't read superblock

Trying to mount a regular audio-cd yielded the same result, so that does
not help.

The last thing I tried then was to grab a no-name cd-r that I got at a
concert somewhere. Burnt audio as I did with both other types of disc
and this time the cd plays in the stereo. No problem.

Had a thought and loaded gnome-cd (cd-player program). It loaded the
cd-r and behold... it played. I popped in the plextor cd-rw and... it
played too! Looks like my stereo's cd-player is really picky about what
it wants to play. (I bought that when cd-recording was still rather new,
apparently it is just not able to recognise these modern cd-rw discs.)
So I am going to try both these discs (cd-r and cd-rw) in the car, where
they are meant to be anyway, and see what that brings.

So this call is closed for now. You live and learn.
Thanks again!

Paul,
You will find that a lot of CD players will not read CD-RW disks. That is why the players that do usually list that on the package. You will also find that some players are also fussy about the die color used in the CDs. Usually the CDs with the silver color work best in CD players. Now, when it comes to mounting audio CDs, you will always get an error. This is because they do not have a file system. As you found out, you can play them, but you can not mount the CD.
