The display of Windows networks in the "Devices" icon in 2006 is a nice feature, but 2005 should be able to show the Windows network in smb4k so there is clearly something preventing it. If you did want to upgrade to 2006 there is no need to spend $85 on the CDs. You have already done 'your bit' by joining the club. You can get CDs from a CD copying service such as www.cheapbytes.com for just a few dollars. As for the printer, it will not autodetect the Windows printer until it can see the Windows network, which is not currently working. Once you can see the Windows network with smb4k, then printer setup should be OK. You should set the workgroup to be the same on Linux and Windows. The samba configuration window I mentioned in KDE is not in 2005 as standard. You have to install the package ksambaplugin from a contrib mirror. If you are on dial up instead of downloading ksambaplugin you may find it simpler to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf Change the 'workgroup' parameter to match your windows network. You should also add your samba users with the command 'smbpasswd -a user_name' in a root terminal where user_name is the name of a Linux user you want to enable for samba sharing. The password it asks for is the *windows* password for that user. Then enter 'service smb restart' to restart the samba service. (Note: to get a root terminal, open a terminal window and type 'su') (Note: smb.conf can only be edited by root user. To get a root copy of konqueror enter Alt+F2 and enter 'kdesu konqueror' in the drop down box. You can then right click on a file to edit it as root.) You may find that changing the workgroup makes the Windows network visible. If not I suggest you check to see if a firewall is running on your Windows machines. derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org
