The first thing I would check is that your dialer (I assume kppp) is set
to one of the following PAP, CHAP, or PAP/CHAP in the accounts tab of
the kppp configure dialog. PAP/CHAP is the default and usually works
fine. Change it to PAP or CHAP and test if these operate any better.

The second which helps for me is change /etc/ppp/options to the following:

lock
noauth
defaultroute
ipcp-max-configure 65
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
idle 600

This works for me, but your isp should(tm) a page which lists the basic
dial-up parameters.

As a third option, you could watch what's happening when you dial by
watching /var/log/messages. ppp also has debugging options which give
more detailed information, but I've never had to resort to them.

However, that being said, I have found that the combination of wvdial
and gnome-ppp appear to be more reliable when using dial-up.

Cheers

John
