Here's how I do it:
1. Incoming mail is filtered to folders for each maillist. That which
doesn't get filtered (mostly spam) is disposed of manually.
2. Each folder is sorted by subject and thread.
3. Once a month, I delete all mail older than two weeks except those
threads or messages flagged as important.
