I don't think this is part of your problem, but you might like to think about how you are going to find things if you keep too many. I use kmail's Expiry settings to keep mine down to a reasonable level. I can mark Important the messages that I definitely don't want deleted, then allow kmail to delete anything older than the setting for that particular folder. Some folders are set to expire mail older than 30 days, some keep them for 6 months.
