After somebody else insisted on using my computer, I am now getting
error messages.
During boot there was some jazz about checking integrity.
When I fire up Thunderbird, I get "Mozilla Thunderbird cannot use the
profile because it is in use." So my emails cannot be accessed.
When I start OO Writer, I get "Either another instance of OpenOffice.org
is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked."
I suspect that the one who everything of mine is hers has turned off
power without shutting down in the normal way.
I'm hoping there is a simple way out of this, coz complicated can take
weeks.

For Thunderbird, look for a file called "lock" in the
/home/<user name>/.thunderbird/<profile> directory.
If you delete this file, you should be able to use your
profile again. One thing to keep in mind is that the
profile is a strange collection of letters, and not
a "real" name. (7jc04nkq.default)
For OpenOffice, the lock file is probably in .oppenoffice/user.
