When you copy your home directly to a FAT partition, you lose most
of the file permissions. You are better off using tar to backup your
home directory to an archive.

You may also want to consider using a backup program to backup XP,
rather then just doing a copy. There is also backup software that
will backup both Windows and Linux - ether to a local drive, or over
the network.
