Yup. A DVD-sized distro might be OK if you have a RAM factory at your disposal (snicker), but a very small LiveCD that allows a user to go online and custom-load the rest of their system might not be a bad thing.

One other thing to consider is that we could reconfigure many of the packages so that many services will run automatically on first boot. For example, if we were to reconfigure urpmi so that it would automatically store the downloaded rpms and then give users the ability to add those rpms to a burnable distro package repository. That way, their downloaded rpms could be kept permanently for re-installs or installation on other PC's. saving bandwidth and time.

If they could create a single CD or DVD which could hold the install ISO AND their updated rpms, they would have a portable install system.

I guess the point is that many of us have a lot of good ideas and experience with those bugs or problems we constantly run into as well as those that others have mentioned on this list time and again.

By using that as one guide (there could easily be others), we could build a pretty sweet distro ourselves. A lot of our development time could be chopped by using Mandriva's tools wherever possible.

So the real question here is,...should we do something with this or not? If all indications are that Mandriva is on the way out, should we go forward with something like this before the other shoe drops or should we just start moving over to other distros and let the cards fall as they might?

If nothing else, we might get Mandriva's attention and they might improve their services. But that's just me thinking out loud here.
