Don't know if this is of any help but --
I have had a similar problem and it was the power standby on the monitor.
Once it went into power down, mode it wouldn't wake back up.
I disabled it in the screensaver and on the desktop. Problem went away.
I re-enabled it in the screensaver and the problem didn't come back.
I use Xscreensaver.
