I had the same problem (and a local printer). Given that cups seemed to
be the culprit i thought that upgrading this could help - and indeed it
did!.

There where no new versions for 2006.0 - so i downloaded
cups-1.2.0-0.4964.1mdk.src
from cooker and recompiled and installed it on my 2006 system.
This has solved the problem completely.

If you want to do the same - I took the src.rpm from
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/SRPMS/main/

If you trust me: i put my rpm's on this address (note the serial rpm was
not installed on my system):
