What is your security level? The USB read only issue may be because you have 
too high a level. Standard security is fine for a desktop machine. 

If you really want a higher level of security, then by selecting 
options>Expert mode in Mandriva Control Centre you can select
Security>SecuritySystem>SystemOptions  and enable/disable specific security 
checks.

I think the option that forces read only on FAT32 partitions is 'User umask'


As for the hanging on exit try disabling acpi (There is a button in 
Mcc>Boot>Boot options.

For the sound I find that the example configurations at 
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ are very useful.
