Thanks for the thought DL. I have looked at PCLOS and like it heaps ~
but as to hdd'ing it ~ I don't get choices [re partitioning] like I
do with most others. That's why I'm still looking at Mandriva ~ and
this time actually buying it. Just not encouraged by what I read is
all. Then, of course, it might well be that only the neg stuff is
getting through at present. So I'm hoping more positive feedback,
such as you have shared, will make it back to me.
Thanks for your feedback ~ greatly appreciated.
SnapafunFrank,
This is the part where I walk around with a large question mark
floating over my head, LOL! You don't get partitioning choices when
installing it??
PCLinuxOS uses the same partitioning tool when installing to the hard
drive that Mandriva uses - DiskDrake - our old and long-time friend.
It's on the first panel of the installer GUI. You select your language
(for the installation only) and click the second button called
"Advanced Partitioning Tool", which brings up the exact same Diskdrake
you're used to seeing. It still does partition resizing and all the
usual things in the exact same manner.
The only difference is related to the fact that you're installing from
a LiveCD, so it wants to format and transfer the data from the live,
virtual partitions to the hard drive ones right away. In the case of
/home,/swap and /tmp, this is a good thing to do, but in the case of
'/' and other partitions, it's best to do them during the next segment
of the installation which is automated for you.
So, for the '/', /var and /usr partitions the answer is 'hide files'
when asked about copying the files to the hard drive. Any special
partitions (non-standard ones) should be created after your first boot
up.
PCLinuxOS uses many of Mandriva's tools - including the Control Center
and all it's usual components, with one exception - it uses Synaptic
as the package installer, which is enormously simpler than RPMDrake.
Just thought you should know. Is that what you were looking for?

Thanks again DL
I only recalled that I was only able to create a / partition a /home
partition and allocate the swap partition last time I attempted to
install PCLOS. I will look into the "hidden files" you mentioned and
seek to learn another way of getting PCLOS to construct all the
partitions I'm after. [ It's normal for me to have 3 primary ~ 1
extended split up to - well on this PIII machine I have a total of
twelve partitions.
Laptops are new to me so this ought to be an interesting exercise in an
attempt to get it right the first time.
By the way, this laptop ( sorry ~ Notepad ) has the Turion64 - MT34 cpu.
Any use looking at 64bit at this stage ?
