your MBR - Master Boot Record was written over by windows - happened to me last week.

reinstall your bootloader - grub or lilo.

bring up linux with a cd and then use the grub or lilo editor to get the original config file for the appropriate one you used and then rewrite the MBR.

I do not know the complete steps so google it.

Subject: [newbie] Problem with bootloader.

Hi,

I have a laptop which has both linux and windows. I experienced some problems in windows and I tried to reinstalled them (which I didn't at the end). However, now the bootloader which allows me to choose which operating system to use has disappear and I can only load windows. I have very valuable files in my Linux partition (all my research work) and I don't want to lose them. Is there any way to fix the problem without deleting anything from the laptop?

Kindest regards
Dimitrios Perperidis
start up with the mandriva install disk, when asked "hit enter for install or f1 for other options, use f1, and type "rescue" without the quotes.
answer the questions to reinstall your boot loader, reboot..
