you need to copy the file that it generates, (/root/XF86Config.new) to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. before you do that, tho; try it out with 'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new'; and see if it gives you the crosshatched gray screen. (and to get out of that, or X in general, hit ctrl+alt+backspace).
