This is about all I can help you with, because it happened to me after 
installing Xfree86 4.1.99.5 (from CVS) I used KDE and all of a sudden I get 
twm.

Look for the file xinitrc. I changed the last line from exec <something> to 
exec  /usr/bin/kdm. That started K display manager and from there, KDE.
