hi,

i have a question which is annoying me.

we've got a couple of machines here for test purposes (HP).

i work on a desktop pc upstairs and i'm trying to start a remote X
session here on my linux machine (RH 7.2)

i added the machine in question to the xhost list and tried X -query
hostip :1

this works for some other machine (i.e. by broadcast) but for some
reason doesn't work for the machine i want! messages are along the lines
of :

(II) I810(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (unknown reason) (II)
I810(0): Not using default mode "1280x960" (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan) (II) I810(0): Not using default mode
"1280x1024" (hsync out of range) (II) I810(0): Not using default mode
"1280x1024" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)

and so on and so on for all resolutions.

so i tried the other approach - telnet to the machine, and set DISPLAY
to my desktop PC's ip.

i can get sam and xterm to pop up on my desktop! great! (i thought)

when i try X i get : X server: Error in /etc/X11/X0screens (line 612)
Device name invalid or missing after keyword "Screen".
X server: Will try default "/dev/crt" Failure to open default device
file `/dev/crt`. Please either specify the proper device filename in
your /etc/X11/X0screens file or fix `/dev/crt`. This filename is either
non-existent or is not a character special file.

Fatal server error:

Now, the entry in the etc/X11/X0screens file is :

Screen /dev/crt

and no, /dev/crt doesn't exist. i tried /dev/tty and /dev/dtremote and
no difference.

has anyone had this problem or knows of a solution? any help greatly
appreciated!!

there is a quick solution which is to reboot into windows and do it from
there but that will be admiting defeat!!

thanks for any help in advance

-Paulo
