So, are you starting it with startx or with xdm? What's in your .xinitrc (with startx) or your .xsession (with xdm)? What window manager are you using? What does the display look like? If you Ctl+Alt+F1 to a text console and run top(1) are the X server and your window manager in there, near the top?
