Hi

I have just installed and am now running 4.2.
I used the source to recompile it, there are a couple of files in the xc
directory on how to install it, INSTALL.org etc

I think it depends on the distro that you are using a bit as only some
are automatically recognised,
I was ok cos I am using Suse 7.1 but with kernel 2.4.17 though I don't
think the kernel version matters (famous last words!!!)

untar the source
cd /usr/src
tar xvzf XFree86.4.2.tar.gz (or what ever it was called)

then from memory I think it was just a case of changing to the xc directory
and entering
make World (note the cap W)
make install (check the doc in xc)

hope this helps a little
sorry its a little vague but I have now removed the source to regain the space
